The art of saying no

Many of us find it surprisingly difficult to turn down requests, (0) even when we know we do not have time to help. We agree to extra work, social events and favours, partly because we are afraid (1) disappointing others and partly because saying yes feels easier (2) the moment.

The problem is that every yes to someone else is, in effect, a no to something (3) . Over time, people (4) constantly put others’ needs first can end up exhausted and resentful.

Learning to refuse politely is a skill like any (5) . It helps to be honest and brief: there is no need to give a long explanation, (6) to apologise again and again. Some people find it useful to buy time by saying they will think (7) the request before replying.

Above (8) , remember that saying no to a request is not the same as rejecting the person who made it.
