Less is more
Many of us own far more than we will ever need. Our cupboards are 0crammed with clothes we never wear and gadgets we have long since forgotten about. Little wonder, then, that the idea of decluttering has 1 on in such a big way.
Its best-known advocates encourage people to go through their belongings item by 2 and keep only what they genuinely use or love. The rest can be given away, sold or recycled. Those who have tried it often say they feel as if a weight has been 3 from their shoulders.
But decluttering is about more than tidy shelves. Many people find that once they stop buying things they do not need, they 4 both money and time. Psychologists have long argued that possessions bring only 5 happiness: the thrill of a new purchase soon wears 6.
Not everyone has been 7 over, of course. Some find the whole approach rather joyless, and point out that it is easy to throw things away when you can buy them again 8 a moment’s notice.
